Understanding News Item Text
As we know, there are two categories of texts in English, namely fiction and non-fiction texts. Texts that include fiction are narrative text, spoof text, annecdote text and so on. While non-fiction text, one example is this news item text. Examples of other non-fiction texts are analytical exposition, review text, hortatory exposition, and so on.
News item text is an English text that aims to present information about an actual event that is happening today or in the near future that is considered important for many people to know.
News Item Text features
The characteristics of this text are as follows:
The language used is short but concise and focuses on an event.
This text also includes the main information in the title of the text (headline).
Usually use verbs to show activities (action verbs) such as push, hit, jump, crash, and so on.
The tenses commonly used in this text are past tenses because the events described have already occurred. However, it is possible to use the Present Tense.
This text also uses saying verbs such as said, stated, reported, and so on.
Generic Structure of News Item Text
There are three possible structures for this text, namely:
Main Event / Newsworthy Event
The part of the text that tells the events that are being discussed in the text and is usually in the form of a summary (summary).
Elaboration / Background Event
Tells the background of the events that occurred. This section describes what happened, to whom, and under what circumstances.
Source (Resource of Information)
Contains comments from people who experienced or was at the event, eyewitnesses, and experts. However, it should be noted that this text does not focus on the perpetrator but on the events that occurred.

Indonesia May Cancel Christmas-New Year Collective Leave Days If The Number of Coronavirus Cases Increased
The spokesman of COVID-19 task force, Wiku Adisasmito, stated that there is a possibility for the government to cancel Christmas-New Year collective leave days. Wiku, in a press conference aired on Presidential Secretariate YouTube account on November 19, 2020, also stated that this cancellation is the consequence we may receive if the number of coronavirus cases increased.
As we have known, Indonesia does not ordinarily have public holdays between Christmas and New Year holidays. However, this policy comes to effect this year to make up for canceling Eid al-Fitr collective leave days due to the concern of new coronavirus outbreak in May.
On November 13, 2020, there is an addition for 5,444 new cases of coronavirus which as the effect of previous collective leave days on October. Learning from this situation, the Indonesian Medical Assiciation and some experts have recommended the government to cancel this Christmas-New Year collective leave days due to the same potential increase in the number of coronavirus cases. In respond to this, Wiku claimed that the government’s decision is actually depends on the community compliance in following applicable health protocols.
